In 2020 more than 100 million motor vehicles will be sold worldwide. This is confirmed in the latest sectoral report carried out this year by the firm Euler Hermes and entitled “world champions of the motor sector.” The study shows that the market is at a turning point in its history. In fact, aside from manufacturing problems, all key players including consumers, are facing unprecedented challenges: artificial intelligence, driverless cars, sustainable transport, electric cars, connected systems…. Never before have industry players needed to come together to face up to these challenges: the role of the big motor shows is to bring about solutions. 2018 promises to be a crucial year for the industry, so here in no particular order is an overview of the most important global events in this top 8.

Without a doubt this show is the world leader in mobility transport and as a pure player motor show. Every year hundreds of thousands of visitors gather over a week and this year 2017 saw a record 810,000 participants.

A special aspect of this show is it features the entire value chain for the mobility sector for companies of all sizes.  Exhibiting new models of vehicles is clearly the star attraction of the show but equally a multitude of innovations are to be found in the logistics and mobility sector and transport in general. In this show manufacturers will feature 228 new models with strong emphasis on electric vehicles with zero 2 emissions.  This trend is particularly evident amongst German companies who expect to unveil more than 150 models of this type in future shows

Paris Global Motor Show

The Paris Global Motor Show organised by the International Organisation of motor manufacturers is THE international reference in terms of exhibition of vehicles.  In contrast to the IAA, this show is entirely given over to manufacturers especially for new series and concept cars. In 2016 the show brought together more than a million professionals as well as the general public over 10 days, which makes it the most visited show in the world! Participants viewed 260 motor brands from 18 countries across 125,000 square metres exhibition area. The 2018 show will be very special as the show is celebrating 120 years. Not to be missed!

NAIAS North American International Motor Show

Based in Detroit the historic basin of the industry in America, NAIAS is the largest car show in north America. Every year over 800,000 car professionals and aficionados come from all over the world to see what over 180 brands have to offer. This is not just a motor show, as it hosts not only manufacturers but also suppliers, innovative technological companies, government organisations and universities.

Although it’s not the biggest show it’s still a reference in terms of innovation and technology, especially in recent years thanks to its partnership with Techstars Mobility. So the most innovative start ups in the sector are showcased. In 2017 more than 50 tech stars were in the spot light on subjects such as artificial intelligence, machine learning, stand alone and connected platforms, security applications and communications infrastructure.

The Geneva Motor Show is a must for buyers and amateurs of specialist cars. This large event plays host twice yearly to a large number of smaller manufacturers at the higher end of the market. The Shanghai Motor Show began in 1985 and has made its mark among international shows. Auto China is the must attend motor show for the Chinese market, and also the largest and fastest growing in the world. It’s a relatively recent gathering, the first event took place in 1995. However, figures are already impressive: 815,000 visitors with 1600 exhibitors from 14 countries, about 1,100 cars exhibited by about a hundred global brands. Despite its international scope, the national players are most active at this show with more than 70% of new products produced by Chinese manufacturers. Given the dynamic of the international market in China, it’s a show that may increase even more over the coming years and in which European and American manufacturers will increasingly invest.

The Tokyo Motor Show, formerly known as the All Japan Motor show was originally devoted to commercial vehicles in the 50’s. With its continued success, the organisers progressively extended this to everyday vehicles during the 90’s Today it’s the largest gathering of the Japanese industry and a major event in Asia.

In 2017 at its 45th show there were more than 700,000 visitors and 150 brand exhibitors. The show also inaugurated TOKYO CONNECTED LAB 2017, an innovative exhibition space dedicated to future technologies that push the boundaries of the motor industry.
