With over 23 GW of installed capacity, pumped storage is the dominant utility-scale energy storage technology in the United States. A mature and proven long-duration energy storage technology, pumped storage has been gaining significant importance in the recent years. Apart from being a power backup device in case of grid outages, it also provides valuable ancillary and grid reliability services to support the increasing volumes of infirm renewable energy integration. Further, development of pumped storage projects does not rely on imports of critical minerals. On the positive side, a total of 19 GW of pumped storage projects have been licensed by Federal Energy Regulatory Commission as of... October 2024. Further, permits have also been issued for 31 GW of projects.The United States still has a tremendous untapped potential for development of pumped storage projects across the country, and enabling provisions with regards to clear targets, tax credits, streamlined licenses and deepening of ancillary markets can help in boosting growth in this space.
