As the Pacific Coast embraces the potential of floating wind energy, California is preparing to establish a robust offshore wind industry. With an ambitious target of 25 GW by 2045 and five lease areas capable of generating 4.6 GWalready secured, the state is poised for significant growth. However, for achieving these goals, California and its neighboring states must address complex permitting processes, constrained supply chains, and inadequate transmission grid infrastructure. Ensuring sufficient capacity for offshore and onshore grids is crucial for the success of the offshore wind sector along the West Coast. Given the current political landscape, including opposition from the new Tru...mp administration, it is critical to maintain momentum for offshore wind development. While this administration may push back on offshore wind initiatives, it should not deter the industry. Offshore wind remains a critical solution for achieving national and state-level climate goals. It is worth noting that the groundwork for offshore wind development was largely laid during the first Trump administration (2017-2020), highlighting bipartisan support for the industry. To continue advancing the conversation and support this vital industry, Global Transmission Report is hosting its 3rd Annual Offshore Wind Transmission West conference on March 25-26, 2025, at the South San Francisco Conference Center. Our mission is to bring together key stakeholders to address challenges, share insights, and explore solutions for building the transmission infrastructure needed to support offshore wind growth in the region, especially considering the current political climate.
